Gary Common Council - The Legislative Authority in City Government
Description: The Gary Common Council make laws through the passage of ordinances and resolutions, temporary or special actions; and, appropriates revenue for the City. The Council fixes the annual salaries of all elected city officials. Committees are an integral part of the council's structure. Committees are of two types - standing and special. Much of the work of the Council is accomplished through committees. The work of the Gary Common Council is initiated by the introduction of a proposed ordinance or resolution. All ordinances and resolutions must be read three times before final passage.
