time and managemant in Germany and Russia
Time and management in Germany and Russia. In economic history, the time factor has increased in significance with progressing division of labor and increasing global competition. However, numerous joint ventures failed to have success due to culturally different attitudes towards time management. Recent studies reveal that more than half of the conflicts occurring between Western European and Russian managers were related to issues of time. Apparently, the use of time follows unwritten rules embedded in the historic and cultural context of societies. So it is hard to simply transfer one time management model from one culture into another one. There does not exist one specific time management concept that universally ensures long-term organizational success.
The symposium focuses on the use of time as a prominent example for the antagonism between cultural diversity and global standards of economic development. It addresses time-related behaviors and policies in the labor world. Empirical experiences with use of time should be reported and analyzed both from the perspective of researchers and from the perspective of practitioners. Time use may refer to organizational process sequences (e.g. workflows in manufacturing) as well as to the development of the enterprise as a whole. Three issues should guide the contributions and discussions. The first issue focuses on similarities and differences between Germany and Russia, taking into account the scope of other European, American and Asian countries. The second issue attends individual differences due to different organizational cultures, different branches of trade and industry, changing cultural values, and different personalities. The third issue focuses on implications and applications of the reported findings in terms of general strategies and concrete training programs aimed at improving intercultural cooperation.
