Sculpture and Installation Projects
My work challenges the viewer to reconsider the physical mass of the forests structure from within a vernacular architectural context. Contemporary American cultures interpretation of historic architectural form and function is reinterpreted through its parts at a structural level. The physical and symbolic materialization of wood is explored through the depiction and manipulation of building materials. The basis of my work constitutes a sculptural imposition of structure onto the raw surfaces of organic tree matter and its contextual reversal. Contrasting forms and material presence reveals disjuncture between a trees inherent tubular physicality and the squared dimensions of its material products. Wood transformed is significant to the identity of contemporary American culture as a symbol of its material past and as an indicator of societal continuity.
