El Vaquero Real was made to celebrate the Original American Cowboy, The Vaquero. Why are they absent from the world of art and virtually forgotten in American history? Its hard to say why the Vaquero has been largely ignored. It could be a simple oversight of busy people. Or perhaps the omission is based on the fact that most Vaqueros are gentle men who prefer not to brag (or let others brag) on their work. After all, Its only work, they might think. They, much like their ancestors, like to lie low, as the saying goes. The situation does beg the question, Should something be done today to celebrate the Vaquero influence on the development of the great American West?
The easy and obvious answer is, Of course.
So, in 2006, portrait painter Lionel Sosa and photographer John Dyer decided that they could help tell a bit about the all-important Vaquero story. Lionels daughter, Cristina, herself an accomplished painter, joined in the adventure. They would take pictures. They would paint portraits. They would tell the Vaquero stories.
