I am a freelance photographer based in Portland, Oregon. I began my photography career after finishing my photojournalism studies at the University of Missouri.
The itch to photograph began years earlier while studying to become a teacher. A personal studies course during that time launched me into this fascinating world, its claim on me growing through my years of teaching.
A photo taken during my first year of teaching remains precious to me: Calvin Thompson standing so proudly next to his blackboard chalk drawing of a Sioux chief on horseback under a strong midday sun, thumbs hooked into his pants while staring proudly back at the camera. As always, it’s a gift when the photographer’s subject cracks the door open, allowing a look at his or her life.
I came to Oregon-a desired destination, having tasted life elsewhere-first working for a group of weekly papers in the Willamette Valley. I moved from there to The Oregonian, working there for twenty-plus years. In addition to capturing images for the paper, I freelanced for other newspapers, magazines and book projects, worked on my studio skills and added to this mix portrait and wedding work.
