I have been taking photos for as long as I can remember. I can still remember photos that I wanted to take but couldn't because I didn't have a camera with me (and I'm talking about 35+ years ago). Nothing is more frustrating than seeing something I want to capture and not having a camera!
I have a great assistant, my daughter Jess. She does the computer aspects, she's got a great eye and knows what makes a pic go from good to great. It's hard for me to trust someone enough to look at my raw photos; and with her it's never been an issue. We go to shows together and you can't miss her, she's the beautiful one with the gorgeous red hair. Look for us and be sure to talk with us whenever you see us.
I love looking at photos, pretty much all photos, and I want to hear the stories behind the photo; I'm not the one that cringes when someone says here let me show you my vacation photos.
I like how things in the background of the photo also tells a story. Unfortunately so much of that stuff is cut out of photos now that photos have gone digital. You can often tell the decade of a photo just by the background incidentals. Think of old family photos you've looked at where you have seen some small object in it, that was not the subject of the photo, but it triggers a cascade of memories; that's what I'm talking about.
I have seen many times the healing properties of photography. People move in and out of our lives, and some for such small moments of time, that having a photo that captures a moment, which may seem totally insignificant at the time, can have great healing power.
What I consider a great photo, is one that captures the energy of the moment. It can be literal energy, e.g., a band on stage, sports, etc., but it's also the energy of emotion in all it's aspects. A great photo can move you to tears, give you a hearty laugh, evoke a memory, provoke introspection, and will leave you in a better place than you started out.
One of the things that always brings a smile to my face when looking at photos I have taken is the photo that catches the 'real' person, when the illusions, shields and personifications/aspects that they show the world fall away and you see the real shining light of their essence. Sometimes it's only for a split second, and that's what capturing moments in time is all about!
