During nearly two decades in the television and film industry, Mason Funk has worked in the U.S. and internationally as a producer and director, as well as a screenwriter, actor, and on-air correspondent. Over the past decade, he has focused his efforts primarily in the realm of documentary reporting and filmmaking. His work has appeared on Discovery, TLC, A&E, and Animal Planet, and his “films about films” have been showcased on DVD releases from major studios including Disney, Focus Features (owned by NBC-Universal), and Warner Bros.
Mason produced more than two hours of content for the Platinum Edition DVD of Disney’s animated classic ALADDIN, named one of the ten best DVDs of 2004 by Entertainment Weekly magazine. Mason’s documentaries about the making of THE LITTLE MERMAID (featuring interviews with Jeffrey Katzenberg, Roy E. Disney, John Waters, and Nora Ephron), and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN II: DEAD MAN’S CHEST, will be released on DVD in Fall, 2006.
Mason garnered an Emmy nomination as a founding producer of the investigative magazine show GOIN’ DEEP on Fox Sports. Mason earned a Gracie Award for writing and associate producing INTIMATE PORTRAIT: MOTHER TERESA, on Lifetime Television. Several of Mason’s earliest collaborations, including THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR (a six-part series for TLC, narrated by Charles Kuralt), and INSIDE THE OVAL OFFICE (a two-hour Investigative Report for A&E), went on to win prestigious CableACE and Writers Guild of America awards.
With business partner David Grabias, Mason has also created and produced promotional films and other content for an impressive array of corporate clients, including Sony, Goldman Sachs, McGraw-Hill, United Way, Activision, and the Getty Center.
Throughout his producing career, Mason has demonstrated the ability to create informative and engaging segments and programs about a vast range of topics, from racism in sports, to endangered species, to international adoptions, to transsexualism. As an on-air correspondent for Fox Sports, Mason covered topics from on-court violence to the paintball craze. Mason was also privileged to co-author the screenplay for THE WINTER IN LISBON, a noir thriller starring jazz giant Dizzy Gillespie in the only film performance of his career.
As an actor, Mason appeared in television commercials for Miller beer, UPS, ATT, and CocaCola. Mason also appeared in the French TV series OPERATION MOZART, in the role of the mysterious stranger with the ominous foreign accent.
A native of Los Angeles, Mason earned his BA in English from Stanford University, studied at Oxford University, and lived for seven years in Lisbon, Portugal. In addition to Portuguese, he speaks fluent Spanish and French. In 2004, he established Channel Road Films, with the goal of providing insightful, entertaining, and socially relevant documentary programming for the profit and the not-for-profit sectors.
