I am a storyteller. My goal is to tell compelling stories that inform and entertain using various media forms and technologies. As USA TODAY's art director, I lead a staff of visual journalists through the creative and production process of multimedia storytelling for a range of editorial projects. My career spans several major U.S. media organizations, including USA TODAY and the San Jose Mercury News, where I was part of the staff awarded the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for general news reporting of the Bay Area earthquake and its aftermath. My work has been recognized by The Society for News Design (SND), The Online News Association (ONA), and other groups. I've appeared as a guest speaker at The Poynter Institute, SND and other venues, and have participated as a judge for the annual SNDies competition. I am the author of two non-fiction books about the American Civil War, both published by The Johns Hopkins University Press.
