Hello and Welcome to Van de Vorst Photography! I hope you enjoy my work as much as I do. I guess I should tell you a little about me and my work. Well, my passion for photography really began with the prospects of capturing mother nature at her nastiest. I love the raw power and force nature can unleash. In my early photography days, my primary focus was that of lightning photography, however living in Saskatchewan, Canada, the season for such violent weather is limited and storms are few and far between. Combine this with no weather forecasting ability (I am not a meteorologist), it makes storm chasing a lot more difficult. This was started strictly as a hobby to capture the fury nature can unload. Living in the smaller community of Weyburn, SK, there was not a lot to do, so my time between storms was occupied by other photography. Working with a film SLR camera, my options were limited as to what I could achieve, but my results never ceased to impress me or the people that had opportunity to look at my work. I continued using my film camera until my actual (non photography based) career path moved me to Moose Jaw and I decided to upgrade to a digital SLR camera to broaden my photography. My primary focus was still that of violent weather, but I started to shift focus to untouched surroundings. I'll explain this a little later. About a year ago, I discovered High Dynamic Range photography that allowed me opportunities for photographs that were otherwise unachievable by conventional photographic techniques. This style of photography was (and still is) relatively new and offered me challenges that allowed me to adapt and fine tune my style of photography. It also allowed me to express who I am as a photographer and shaped my philosophy and style of photographic art. I found I had a knack for this style of photography and decided to run with it. Although I can shoot other styles, I find that HDR imaging offers me more of what I am looking for in my photography.
So, here we are today. I should touch on my personal philosophy of photography as mentioned above. I believe that our surroundings are meant to be untouched and non manipulated. What you see is what you get. From a pristine landscape, to a dilapidated farm house, I don't mess with anything. I think my style of photography offers me a challenge and provides me with greater appreciation for my work. I am the one posing for shots, not necessarily to be in the picture, but to move and shift my body and camera to achieve the results I want to achieve. I do not provide myself the luxury of moving my subjects in tight close quarters, removing unwanted foliage (physically damaging living things) or wiping off the "decay" nature has provided me for that perfect shot. I make do with the space I have and interpret the shots at hand. Sometimes, one shot will take an hour to achieve, but the end results are worth every second of patience and every ounce of "frustration." A lot of my outdoor shots rely on the behavior of mother nature, be it rain, cloud cover, wind, lighting etc, and most of my work relies on multiple exposures combined to achieve the effects I want. But these issues provide me with opportunity to improve myself as a photographer. Every opportunity to shoot is a learning experience in both photography and patience and it is worth every moment I spend doing it.
