Awadh, known for it’s etiquettes, ‘tehzeeb’ and various fabric enhancing embroidery work has majorly contributed to the fashion industry of Royal Era. .Various kinds of embroideries like Chikankari, Kamdani or Mokaish as commonly known from Awadh had been favorites amongst the royalties of Regal India. True not all karigars originated from Awadh region. They mostly found their way through various matrimonial alliances of the Nawabs of Awadh . It is said that the kamdani karigars came only to Awadh along with the Begums originating from Persia.
From various jewels in the crown of Awadh’s Royal fashion PALLAVI N SINGH presents ‘KAMDANI’ or ‘MOKAISH’.
In the past Kamdani used to be done with real gold and silver wires. However with changing time it is replaced by Mokaish wires. Wires are treated by a process which is a closely guarded family secret to give it an antiquated appearance. Then it is flattenned and used to craft patterns on textile. No needle is used to weave the wire into the fabric.
Authentic kamdani work is now only done by a single family under the tutelage of the last man who learned it from his forefathers and has not found his next clan worthy of guarding the secret and thus refused to pass on the knowledge. Kamdani will die with him forever in Awadh. Though market has found many imitators yet there is none who even comes close.
