My Guiuan
Guiuan, Eastern Samar has a very important role in the history of the Philippines. One of its islands, Homonhon, was the first land set foot upon in March 16, 1521 after so many months at sea by the great Portuguese navigator, Ferdinand Magellan, who was in the employ of the King and Queen of Spain. We can say that Christianity in the Philippines was planted in that Homonhon Island shore.
The upshot was the beautiful 17th century Immaculate Conception Church in Guiuan.
Guiuan was a US Naval-Operations base for General Douglas MacArthur's drive to liberate the Philippines from the clutches of Japanese imperialism. The Guiuan airfield and airport is still in use today for domestic flights.
The Golden Cowrie, an under-seawater snail species with a brilliant orange sheen, is found in Guiuan. Surely Guiuan is the Pearl of the western Pacific Ocean.
