Mobile homes and travel trailers that were intended for hurricane Katrina evacuees are now on the market. Those trailers once belonged to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), but now the federal government is auctioning them off. A regional FEMA office spokesperson says the units now being auctioned have passed safety guidelines, regarding formaldehyde concerns which developed after Katrina. Given the green light, one mobile home seller in Hinton says she's now eager to offer these homes to the public. Shana Wheeler, owner of Wheeler Rental and Mobile Home Sales, shows us one of their new mobile homes for sale. Plenty of storage, she says while walking through the home. They're ready to live in. The mobile home is handicapped accessible and fully furnished and an air-conditioning unit sits in a box along the hallway. As you can see, everything is still in the box, Wheeler says. Brand new, just been sitting. This entire home hasn't been used for more than 4 years. Following hurricane Katrina in 2005, FEMA bought more than 100,000 mobile homes and travel trailers for evacuees. Some of the homes were occupied, but thousands were not. I've watched them for several years now sit and go unoccupied and most of them not be used, Wheeler says. So I was thrilled to see something being done with them. The federal government recently began auctioning thousands of units online. They've been sitting at an airport in Hope, Arkansas. Wheeler bought hundreds of units, some of which are advertised on the website www.craigslist.com, and says they have been tested and cleared of any formaldehyde gas issues that made national news. She's now confident these more narrow homes can fit in older mobile home parks, where the units are so close together. Now we have a home that we can put back in, that will actually fit the space that is needed, Wheeler says, and space is very crucial.
