I grew up in San Francisco and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. I went on to Stanford Medical School and chose Ophthalmology as a specialty.
My wife and I have been traveling worldwide for many years, visiting more than 130 countries. During this period, I have accumulated a large photographic portfolio.
My main photographic interest is people - especially people of the developing world. Most of my work would be considered documentary, but not in a photo-journalistic sense. I have tried to capture "slices of life - street shots" and present these images in a way that is visually stimulating and, hopefully, educational.
The vast majority of my "people photographs" are candid - almost none are posed, and there are no "studio shots" in the collection. Most of these photos were taken in everyday human situations - at markets, festivals, and train stations. This type of photography tends to produce images with interesting main subjects but often cluttered, distracting backgrounds. Since I am more interested in art than in journalism, I've chosen to simplify the background in some of these images in order to produce a more dramatic photograph.
