1:30-4:30
p.m. Sundays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays or by appointment.
Closed Easter, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Dec. 1, 2010 through Mar.
2, 2011. The Wapello campus
houses a Museum that features hundreds of artifacts from early residents, One-Room School, Country Church, Genealogy Library, Native American Indian
Artifacts, Grandma's Bedroom, Louisa Stage and a dining room that is available for
gatherings. Group tours can be organized. For more information, call

Admission is
free, however donations are appreciated and help keep the museum operating.
Our sister museum, the
Columbus Community Heritage Museum ,

Coming
to the Heritage Center!
2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17 – “What’s Old is New Again” by State Archaeologist Bryan Kendall. He will look at Archaeology in Iowa and how
modern methods are rediscovering many sites and teasing new, often dramatic, evidence from old locations.

Native
histories
LCHS has received
permission from the State Historical Society of Iowa to print some
stories from 1958-era Palimpsest magazines regarding the early
American Indians who lived in this area.
Here is the first one!
We also have permission
to reprint a story from the Feb. 13, 2009 Burlington daily newspaper, The Hawk Eye, about a recent
archeological dig dubbed Oak Village located near
Oakville.
Wapello Library The Keck Memorial Library is being
remodeled. It has a pleasant new area for genealogical research.
State Research
The Reading Rooms,
located at the
State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust St., Des Moines, and at the
Centennial Building, 402 Iowa Ave., Iowa City,
will be open to the public 12:30-4:30 p.m.
Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday, Monday and
official state holidays.
Genealogy The
Seventh Annual Family History Symposium, “Putting the Pieces
Together”, will be held Oct. 23, 2010 at 4300 Trailridge Road SE,
Cedar Rapids. Due to construction on East Post Road, take Mt Vernon
Rd SE to East Post and go North ½ mile. There is No Admission
Fee. Registration begins at 8:30 am. Classes will be held from
9 a.m.-4 p.m., bring your own lunch, and enjoy a Genealogy
Humor program. (Nearby food vendors will be identified if
requested.) A whole day attendance will provide 6 classes, chosen
from 21 offerings.
