Roy Burbank Photography
I’m a Pacific Northwest based photographer that focuses (pun intended) on Black & White silver gelatin prints. I got my serious start in photography in 1972 while spending a summer in Oregon with an old high school friend. I was born and spent my formative years in Southern California before moving to Montana. After my summer in Oregon, I built a darkroom in a daylight basement in my parent’s home in Missoula, Montana. I continued with Black & White through my college years, plus did some work with color slides; I really enjoyed the entire process of loading my own film cartridges from bulk rolls of film all the way through developing the film (slides and B&W) and printing (B&W). I took a break from photography while raising a family (actually I helped my wife) and have now replaced my old equipment with newer, more professional equipment. While I’ve done some digital work, my real love and passion is film. With respect to Black & White, I am captivated by the depth and richness of the silver print. While digital prints have made remarkable progress recently, my preference (it’s all subjective) is the silver gelatin print.
Since my early years, I’ve been a lover of nature; backpacking in the Sierra Nevada for weeks at a time, day hikes in the mountains, beaches and hills of the Western United States and even planning a career in the National Park service until advanced chemistry and biology derailed those plans. So I turned to art; photography, sculpture and graphics. My photography is straightforward without tricks or gimmicks; I try to capture images as I see them. Someone once asked me what really gets me excited about photography; it’s the light. Whether it’s the luminance of a snow covered mountain long after the sun has set or the rain-coated streets under the streetlights at night or early morning, I just love what the light does to everything; it sets the mood. I think my best work happens when I’m by myself and let myself go; I don’t think about the craft but instead let it flow from within. Those are very special days when I can come back from a shoot really excited about what I’ve experienced; it’s what sends me out on the next adventure. There is an abundance of subject matter in the Northwest, from mountains, to wheat fields, to oceans, to cities. I hope you enjoy looking at these images as much as I enjoy creating them.
