Byron Dee photography
Byron Matthews was born in the postcard perfect town of Kealakekua, in western side of the Big Island. Two years later his Father passed away, so his mother relocated to the rainier eastern coast of Hawaii to be close to their family. It was there in Puna that he grew up, spending most of his days near the ocean.
His mother proved to be his biggest influence when it came to photography. Every week she would take her two boys on some adventure and always with her trusty 35mm Nikon One Touch. No matter where she went, her camera was always by her side. Mother never sold a photo but countless friends and family have her to thank for many of their family portraits.
After his 18th birthday Byron decided to move to Phoenix Arizona. But it wasn't until his 20's that he truly discovered his passion for Photography. At the time he was working for a major corporation in Phoenix and would escape out to the desert for some solitude whenever he had a moment; and just like his mother did years ago, Byron would bring along his camera to capture the beauty around him.
Eventually Byron was able to break free from the monotony of his corporate job and managed to do a bit of traveling. He made several trips to Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, the Virgin Islands and Australia, eventually moving back to the Big Island of Hawaii to settle down near his family.
Currently Byron does a lot of nature photography, spending off weekends exploring the island with his red Jeep, "it is almost impossible not to discover beauty at every turn, if only you look".
