Elizabeth Cannon. Elizabeth Cannon is a rarity- a petit couturier with a pre-designed secondary line.She is a resource for independent women who want imaginatively conceived, beautifully made, last-a-lifetime clothes.Linda Dyett, New York Magazine Small is Beautiful.Educated at RISD, the N.Y.-based designer spent a year in Paris where her interests broadened from illustration to include fashion design. She has 4 children's book titles and has shown her watercolors as well as her clothing in numerous New York art galleries. She began collaborating with other artists in the early 1980's and in 1987 invited 12 artists to create fabric for a show of dresses at the E.M. Donahue Gallery. In 1996 she created a separate entity called Ecole Martine which specializes in clothes made from artist-designed fabrics.
In 2001 she began designing for dance. Her projects include Trisha Brown's Wintereisse which premiered in 2002 at Lincoln Center and Ms. Brown's O Composite for the Paris Opera Ballet in 2004.
She designs for men and children as well as women and her ingenuity with materials has led to numerous projects for print and screen. She also tutors private students in couture.
Elizabeth Cannon fashions the accoutrements for a world she would live in. I design clothes for a life that is pleasurable, she says. A credo that needs no apology.
