Eleanor Silverberg - Addressing Situational Loss The 3-A Grief Intervention Approach was devised in 2005 to raise dementia caregiver grief awareness in clinical practice. The family caregivers situation is fraught with loss, ambiguous in nature and exacerbating as the disease progresses. While providing care, they are witnessing their afflicted family member mentally disappearing at a painstakingly slow rate while still very much physically present. Affliction of the disease is the primary loss, a catalyst for secondary losses such as loss of social network, finances, roles, freedom and the ideal of how things were supposed to be. The dementia experience has been described as " the ongoing funeral" and "a living death". As one caregiver put it, family members have to be able to "shift gears" in order to cope, manage the situation and move forward. Eleanor Silverberg's intention is to address situational loss and raise grief awareness that is commonly overlooked in clinical practice. She carried out this intention for dementia caregivers by devising the 3-A Grief Intervention Approach. She wrote an article combining the grief and caregiving research which resulted in the introductory components of Acknowledge, Assess and Assist for the purpose of addressing situational loss fraught with ambiguity. The article entitled Introducing the 3-A Grief Intervention Model for Dementia Caregivers was published in the Omega Journal of Death and Dying in 2007 (See 'About 3-A Approach' page to obtain copy of the article).
