My Business - THE STORY OF COMPANY "I" 82nd Illinois Volunteers The "Leland Soldiers" During the summer of 1862 eighteen Scandinavian men from Leland, IL answered Lincoln's call for 300,000 more troops by enlisting in the 3rd Board of Trade Regiment at Chicago. By the order of Governor Yates, this company of Scandinavians was attached to the 82nd Illinois Volunteers, a regiment of immigrants. These soldiers from Leland would make it to the Eastern Theater of the war on the eve of Fredericksburg, and in due time would endure terrible losses at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and would end the war with General Sherman and the March to the Sea.
