Daniel Chard | chard@rowan.edu | The new paintings extend from the work of the last 25 years, approximately 400 paintings. While there have been tangents along the way, the results always led to a stronger connection with landscape phenomena. “Through-the-window” realism remains apparent, with the viewer in the landscape, the ground plane leading into the landscape from the viewer’s feet. The images show nature in the raw with occasional references to the presence of humankind. The basis for much of the aesthetic is the tight rendering of landscape material and the structuring of two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements. The truth or correctness of the painting space is to be experienced in the phenomena of the completed painting. To some, the paintings may appear realistic or photographic, but they are not; the paintings are fabrications. As in all realist imagery, much of the visual impact results from the tension between the realist expectations of the viewer and the image itself, the variation from what we expect. In the end, the painting presents a phenomenon to the prepared viewer that is in part about the landscape, but mostly about the image as something larger–an aesthetic entity– hopefully tapping into our common experience.

Chard Farm was established in 1987 by Motueka brothers Rob & Greg Hay. They were the first to come into the area with the intention of setting up a commercial vineyard and selected the Chard Farm site after careful evaluation of the peculiarities of grape growing in Central Otago.
