The Mini debuted in April 1959, marketed under an inordinate number of names. It was called “The Orange Box” during concept design, the Austin SEVEN (SE7EN) globally, the Morris Mini-Minor in the UK and commonwealths, the Austin 850 and Morris 850 in America (the original Mini lived in America from 1962-1986) and France, and the Austin Partner and Morris Mascot in Denmark. In fact, the name “Mini” did not arrive until 1961, when the Austin SEVEN was rebranded as the Austin Mini, for “minimum.” However, its reputation was anything but.
