Deb Paradise Creative Expressions -- Clay, Photography, Meditation
Biography
Deb Paradise, began her career delving creative photographic processes and as a professional photographer. Her fine art photography explored manual alteration of her photos with color, moving parts, creating 3 dimensional sculptural pieces. Eventually, she became a meditation teacher, combining meditation with hands-on energy healing for almost twenty years. This deeply transformative work inspired a natural transition into her work with clay. Unifying the artistic and the sacred aspects of her life’s work, informs each of her clay creations.
Artist Statement
My photography is all about intimacy -- intimacy with nature, intimacy with items and intimacy with self. I offer the viewer a sense of being close up and personal, right there in the camera. The effect of these views gives feeling of motion and stimulates the senses for a rich experience of the environment. Rather than tell the story to my viewers, I offer them a chance to know the story from their inner cues – thus, becoming their own story.
My work in clay is a collaboration between what I see and what the clay wants to become. Clay is a natural material and Nature is evident in all of my work. I build each piece from slabs, coils and chunks of clay in a process known as Hand-Building. Working with porcelain and stoneware clays, I fold, sculpt, squish and squeeze the clay, pushing the limits of the materials. I like to experiment with alternative surfaces and finishes such as graphite, wax and stones.
Most recently, I have been fulfilling commissions for wall pieces for both residential and commercial installation. This work reflects the Five Elements of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Metal. Taking inspiration from wood, leaves, lichens, corals, ocean, animals, and flowers, my newest work floats and flows across walls, in lyrical and harmonious ways.
There is a deeply personal side of my work, as well. For these pieces I take inspiration in sacred words and ideas. I begin my work in the studio with meditation and visualization. Often, I stamp words, phrases and prayers into the clay, slowly building layers of meaning into each sculptural piece. Then I add motion and emotion through color, texture, and shape, giving each piece a sense of whimsy, humor and fun.
Occasionally I will work with paint, pen and pencil to create energy drawings and painting. These works are created while in a deeply meditative space and reflect the energy inherent in the moment or the subject. These are intuitively guided pieces, allowing an inner guidance to express in a visual creation.
My work draws on the symbols and rituals found in many different cultural, spiritual, and ethnic philosophies giving it an underlying diversity and a sense of universal connectedness.
