Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) was first developed by Aaron Beck and is considered to be the most clinically effective form of 'talk' treatment. CBT is based on the idea that what we think affects how we feel and then how we act in response to our environment. Most people have a repertoire of distorted thoughts in their minds that began programming from birth and are based on the sum of what they have experienced in their lives up until the current time. For instance, a man who has been abused as a child may believe that people can't be trusted. He will likely approach most new situations feeling suspicious and therefore unable to respond to the new experience in a joyful, open-minded manner. 'Reframing' the automatic thoughts takes lots of practice, but it absolutely works! Tomorrow Counseling Services therapists have other CBT based methods that work similarly.
