Hi… I’m Tim Coughlin and I live in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Well, La Crosse is my mailing address, but I actually live on French Island on the banks of French Slough, hence one of my galleries is “French Slough”. La Crosse is located in the heart of a unique part to the Midwest named the DRIFTLESS AREA. The Driftless Area is a region of the Upper Mississippi River Basin that encompasses southeast Minnesota, southwest and west-central Wisconsin, northeast Iowa, and a part of northwest Illinois. The glaciers that covered much of the Midwest bypassed the Driftless Area, giving rivers time to cut down into ancient bedrock and create its distinctive landforms. Most of the pictures you will find in my galleries were taken in this area, in fact, most within 25 miles of La Crosse. I named this little adventure Driftless Photo because I live in this remarkable region of the United States and I take most of my pictures here while drifting… Verb: "...carried slowly by a current of air or water, walking slowly, aimlessly, or casually". News... I recently entered the 2010 Photo Contest at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota. This is the first contest I've ever entered and feel very honored to have placed first in the River Category, first and third in the Flyway Category plus third place in the People's Choice Award. The photos will also appear in the 2011 National Eagle Center Calendar. For now, the winning photos can be viewed in the gallery above titled La Crosse Area... National Eagle Center.
