Hope for Darfur, Justice in Sudan Rally - May 15, 2011 in Washington DC
Darfur Interfaith Network, in partnership with GI-NET/Save Darfur, is proud to sponsor the second annual Hope for Darfur Justice in Sudan Rally. This year our event will be on Sunday, May 15, 2011, starting at the Metropolitan AME Church, 1518 M Street, N.W. and will proceed to the White House at Lafayette Park. In case of inclement weather or unforseen circumstances, we will remain at Metropolitan AME Church.We are bringing together interfaith communities and concerned citizens to shine a spotlight on the 8th year of unimaginable violence, of which many still consider genocide, in Darfur. We will draw attention to the inhumanity that continues in other areas of Sudan, and raise money for humanitarian relief and advocacy efforts. We want to let surviving victims of the Darfur genocide, the people of Southern Sudan, the Nuba Mountains, the Blue Nile Region and Eastern Provinces know they are not alone or forgotten.The message to our government is:-The US should not lift sanctions on Sudan until verifiable and sustained progress is made on Darfur and the CPA is implemented;-Sudan should not be removed from the State Sponsored Terrorist List until the administration can certify that the Government of Sudan is not supporting the LRA and has not supported terrorist group over the prior six months;-And the normalization of relations with Sudan must be contingent upon the resolution of the conflict in Darfur and peace throughout Sudan.We encourage the U.S, along with the international community, to renew and strengthen the mandate for UNAMID. The international community led by the United States should push for the Government of Sudan to provide unimpeded access for peacekeepers and humanitarian workers to areas where fighting has taken place and where internally displaced persons have fled.In addition, we will highlight the evidence of increased systemic rape and sexual violence in recent months against women and young girls in Darfur, and call on ALL rebel groups and the Government of Sudan soldiers to end the violence once and for all so the innocent men, women and children can live in peace and with dignity.Photos from last years march/rally courtesy of Martha Bixby from Save Darfur Coalition.
