Shadrach Cobb, a slave on a Mississippi cotton plantation, is the biological son of his master. Morris Pendrickton. He inherits skills in the shoe-making craft which have passed down through the Pendrickton family for generations. This endears him to Morris, but creates a rivalry, which evolves into hate in the mind of Barlow Pendtrickton, Morris' white son and legal heir. In response to a perceived threat on his life, Shadrach and his wife, Kancy, make a daring escape via the Underground Railroad.
