Terry Jones *********************************************************************************************************Angry SWEA teachers express outrage over stalled contract negotiations In a show of force members of the SWEA teachers union have been using their numbers to fill the SWCS board meetings to standing room capacity. The union is angry over the stalled contract negotiations with district leaders and the board of education. Most of the teachers that have been attending the school board meetings wear the signature powder blue SWEA t-shirts and hold up signs supporting their union. In an online interview with Columbus Local News, SWEA's union president, Rolla Beach said, "members are trying to show more of a vocal presence... We are focusing increasingly in the board of education meetings." Beach said. "A number of our members have been in attendance." Columbus Local News While neither side will comment on the contract negotiations, district Treasurer Hugh Garside has predicted that South Western will lose at least 9 million dollars in state funding. The estimated amount of funding cuts could go higher as the state deals with its own 8 billion dollar budget deficit. Teachers have been expressing their outrage against the community and district leaders during the Public Participation segments of the school board meetings. Jackson Middle School teacher and SWEA member, Julie Haack said that she gets embarrassed when outsiders say our community doesn't support education. She went on to discuss the hostile work climate and said that the board of education and district administration do not appreciate the teachers. Annie Smith, also a SWCS teacher and union member spoke at a recent school board meeting. "I did not become a teacher for the money,nor did I expect a slap in the face!" Smith said. Smith added that she never imagined " that being a teacher would be a profession that would be berated by the community and disrespected by district leaders!" Smith and other teachers who spoke at the board meeting declared that they were members of the South Western Education Association, but at the end of her speech Smith pulled off her SWEA t-shirt and shouted to the board members and district administrators, "Now I'm a community member!" she said. South West Messenger Salaries and benefits packages are the largest expenditures for school districts. Salaries and benefits for South Western are nearly 83 percent of this districts budget. That's 156 million dollars of the districts 196 million dollars in budget expenditures which is paid to salaries and benefits packages.Terry Jones.
