The Great Auto Race 1908 | In the Beginning
On January 31, 1907, French newspaper Le Matin issued a challenge: Is there anyone who will undertake to travel this summer from Paris to Peking by automobile? Nearly 9,000 miles and 60 days later Prince Borghese, an Italian nobleman, crossed the finish line in his machine called the Itala. Two French autos, both DeDions, followed close behind. This event set the stage for The Greatest Auto Race on Earth and unknowingly precipitated a chain of events that shaped the world.
