The Heaven Drop
The Heaven Drop is the story of a German woman and an American man who, after learning their fathers ran a black-market drug trade while waiting out World War II in Tsingtao (Qingdao), China, try to revive the drug.
Der Himmlischerdropfen (the Heaven Drop) mimics the experience of ascending to heaven and remaining there eternally. Petra Heckenbach has the last supply of it, and Matthias Reisingers father is the only one alive who can tell her what its made of.
Matthias, a low-level CIA analyst, heads to Chicago to question his father, Walter, only to learn his older brother has already tried in the company of a woman named Petra Heckenbach. Afraid and not knowing which Petra is real, Matthias tells Walter hes got the drug. The news causes a stroke that wipes out half of Walters brain and whatever was repressing his memory.
First from his hospital bed in Chicago and then spirited to an apartment in Washington, DC, Walter reveals the drugs origins: Petras father Severin, a candymaker and chemist who wanted to expand his line of Gesundheitmintzenbonbon health mints, was searching for herbs in China when war erupted in Europe. Staying in Tsingtao, a German colonial city, he attended a beheading contest held by Japanese officers, and noticed that the victims remained conscious after decapitation.
With diligent research, Severin found that when dying begins, a chemical from the pineal gland floods the brain and body, initiating a death cascade that blocks pain receptors, releases memory, and begins the ascent to heaven.
Thinking hed solved the mystery of an afterlife, Severin learned how to extract the peptide from the brains and soon had heaven in a bottle.
Meanwhile, Walter Reisinger was a German-American pacifist delivering medicines to the Chinese. Captured by the Japanese, he pretended to be German and was sent to Qingdao, where he befriended Severin. Learning that users of the drug would rather die than kill, he and Severin sold the Heaven Drop to the Japanese army, and believed their knowledge would change the world once the war was over.
But after the mass suicide of 45,000 addicted Japanese infantry near the wars end, a task force of German commandos and a competing team of Americans set out to capture the enterprise. In the ensuing battle, Severin and the drug disappeared and Walter was once again mistaken, this time for dead.
As Matthias realizes hes been consuming other peoples afterlives, and unsure which Petra is real or who his brother has become, he must decide what and whom to trust and whether to reveal the truth or keep it buried.
