Linwood Riggs Photography
Hello, and welcome to my website. Most of my recent photographs are of wildlife, with particular emphasis on the osprey, eagles and sturgeon that are found in abundance in the Kennebec River Valley, near my home in Augusta, Maine. Whenever I can, I also like to make an occasional trip out West, to Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and the Northern Rockies.
In May of each year, I exult in capturing the drama that unfolds at Damariscotta Mills, Maine, where osprey plunge dramatically into the stream to catch alewives. I have been able to capture numerous osprey carrying two fish in their talons, and this year I even photographed one flying off with three fish.
During the months of June and July, I can often be found down by the Kennebec River in Augusta photographing Atlantic and Shortnose Sturgeon as they leap energetically from the water and return to the murky depths with a noisy splash. I have dozens of such images in my Sturgeon gallery, and they are by far my most-viewed photographs, with browsers often finding my web site as a result of a Google search. There are a few video clips of jumping sturgeon online, but very few photographers have obtained still images of the prehistoric-looking fish jumping out of the water. I read that a few years ago, the New York Times offered a substantial cash award to anyone who could produce a publishable photo of a leaping sturgeon, but apparently nobody claimed the prize. It's quite a challenge to capture them in mid-air, but with years of practice and lots of patience, it can be done!
Most of the photographs displayed here are for sale; any prints you buy will not show the copyright watermarks that I use on the web site to discourage theft of images. Prints are sold for private wall hanging only, not for reproduction or any other purpose.
