Stephen Procter Ceramics
My ceramic vessels are made entirely by hand in my Brattleboro, Vermont studio. They are fired to stoneware temperature (2300º F), giving them the strength and durability to last for generations. The bold lines and generous shapes I favor echo ancient traditions, but I inflect them with my own imagination and a contemporary sensibility. Much of my work celebrates the intrinsic beauty of the fired clay itself. The unglazed surfaces emphasize the elemental nature of the medium and the forms themselves as compositions. The scale of the pots gives them a sense of presence that challenges the viewer to regard them as equals. I hope my pieces invite contemplation and enliven the spaces they inhabit. I consider a piece successful if it has an animate presence and if people are drawn to touch it and are rewarded by revisiting it often.
