Dissident is a production company coming together at the intersecting worlds of visual arts, film, music, performance, installation and new technology. It is Dissident’s view that to truly understand contemporary culture one must have a deep knowledge of these approaches as individual disciplines and as inter-dependent hybrid form. Through our practice in short form media, such as commercial, music video, photography and visual arts, combined with long form media such as feature film, theater, and forms of visual art such as performance, can we be in a true position of understanding the hows and whys of contemporary culture. In particular having the ability to understand and create the hybrids that form contemporary youth culture, while also knowing how that extends to innovative approaches to the popular culture in general. From consulting, producing, directing, co-directing, editing or self financing projects with the likes of avant-garde giant Robert Wilson working with Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and Sean Penn, or video artist Tony Osler working with Sonic Youth, visual artist and thinker Dan Graham collaborating with puppet master Phillip Huber of Being John Malkovich, from engaging low-fi art, sculpture and props master Timothy Rossiter who has created looks for Michel Gondry, Dissident shows how collaborations work best. From creating a seminal mid 80’s punk rock club, a highly influential decade long running radio show, to feature films such as Kurt Cobain About A Son with a sound score by Ben Gibberd of Death Cab For Cutie to one the best films on the current approach of artists and youth culture made in recent memory in the form of Beautiful Losers. Favela Rising a film on Afro Reggae that has won as many awards as any film on the circuit, and probably more to solely advising one of the top brands in the world on the nature of youth culture today and launching a video and print campaign for the companies new vertical component Dissident shows a dynamic range of approaches. Whether it is in a gallery or on the net, zine or magazine, theater with a stage or with a screen, in store or outdoor, Dissident produces media that works across all platforms. In many cases the same content set working across multiple technologies. Equally as comfortable at the Whitney Biennial, to being short listed for an Oscar and nominated for an Emmy, winning over 50 feature film awards with less than a handful of films, working with the United Nations, a project on HBO, Sundance, PBS or at the Palazzo Reale in Milan, Beijing Olympics, a loft in Brooklyn or at the Whitney. From zines and blogs to capturing the cover of Vanity Fair, to innovating ground breaking proprietary technology to drive there many HD projects there is not and avenue that Dissident will not pursue to make their projects truly unique from concept to completion. Capturing more press for their work in high definition than any other production company Dissident is always looking to construct their next project from the newest of forms. With one of the deepest knowledge sets and contacts in the visual arts, music, and film, Dissident is in a position to develop the most groundbreaking projects and have proven just that over the last five years. Maintaining their autonomy with an off the radar approach Dissident chooses projects that they feel are important to collaborate on, with companies which they created such as Sidetrack Films, or worked within with practically unlimited access such as Cablevision’s Voom HD or Nike, just to name a few. When one sees these projects they are quickly and unmistakably recognized as something very different while felt and then recognized to be at the very heart of our cultural world. This place is unmistakably Dissident’s territory, the place they live.
