The Rare Disease Foundation
A rare or orphan disease affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people. However, there are more than 7,000 rare disorders that, taken together, affect approximately 3 million Canadians. One in ten individuals in Canada have been diagnosed with a rare disorder. -Canadian Organization for Rare Disorders (CORD) If one in ten individuals in Canada has a rare disease then in fact, it is not unusual to have a rare disease. It is also not unusual to be affected by rare disease if we recognize that the whole family of a patient is affected. These rare, inherited human diseases often affect the most vulnerable populations, our children and our aged. Most pediatric diseases are rare diseases and all cancers affecting children are rare diseases. We are a group of parents, clinicians, and scientists who have come together for one purpose- to improve the lives of children afflicted with rare diseases. We intend to deliver a multifaceted approach that includes organizing our community of families to provide cross-disease mutual support regardless of diagnosis, to fundraise and to play a role in shaping research priorities.
