Alberto Massarese was born in Naples in 1975. After getting a Diploma in Classical Studies, he was awarded the first prize Prize from the Cartoonist Neapolitan Association Atri21 where he studied Drawing and Illustration with Mario Punzo until 1996. He then moved to the United Kingdom with a scholarship awarded by the European Community where he achieved in 2000 his Bachelor of Arts in European Film Studies with Art from the University of Reading. After his graduation he worked as a Fine Arts gallery manager in Bond St, London (Woburn Fine Arts); he also assisted in the presentation of major events for the British Cartoon Art Trust and became a member of the Comics Creator Guild. He had a short Italian spell where he worked as a production assistant ( Acropolis Festival) for the Centro Sperimentale Arte Popolare: a successful theatrical company that Alberto’s parents have been running since 1970s, which also constitutes his creative background and a significant step in his formation. He then moved back to London where he started working freelance for the British Government (Dept for Constitutional Affairs) further increasing his Academic career with a specialization in illustration for storyboarding at Central St Martins (The University of the Arts)
More recently he has completed 'Lady M', Anglo-Italian production of a short film based on Shakespeare’s Scottish play and his first experience as a filmmaker. It is a dark and ironic study of the character of Lady Macbeth, a nightmarish vision of the play set in the 1930s and completed with Broadway style dancing witches!
Massarese’s approach to film is substantially of a visual nature. In fact the film photography, splendidly executed by Massimo Velo, is denoted by intense chiaroscuro effects obtained by the strong contrast of cold and warm colours and a very theatrical approach to the subject rendered by combining an extensive use of establishing shots and a classical composition of the framing. Alberto’s visions and ideas for new projects often revolve around the thin boundaries that can be found between sanity and insanity, dream and reality.
In the past few months Alberto has been traveling extensively in Europe and the United States working as a storyboard artist in Italy and devloping a project in NY with coreographer Bianca Falco. He currently resides in Amsterdam.
