The Lighting Project
The Lighting Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to substantially improve the energy efficiency of lighting systems in low income neighborhoods throughout the world. Currently, over 4 trillion pounds of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions can be attributed directly to the generation of artificial light annually. These emissions can be reduced by upto 90% through the use of efficient lighting systems, but these systems fall out of reach of low income communities due to their high cost of deployment. The corporation will fund the deployment of these energy efficient lighting systems in low income neighborhoods through a carbon offset mechanism, both through voluntary contributions and through the Clean Development Mechanism under the UN Kyoto Protocol.
