The Poemedy Project!
The Poemedy Project is a documentary film that follows Atlantic Coast regional theatre artist, author, attorney, actor and director Summer Hill Seven (100 Most Creative Thinkers in Florida, AUDELCO Award, CARBONELL Nominee) on a 50 state tour as he presents a literary concert to the best & worst high schools in America.
The literary concert is an original multimedia memoir stage performance (a combination of poetry, drama, comedy and music, called ‘Poemedy’). The title of the Poemedy that is at the center of the Poemedy Project is Hang Time por Rubin Stacy and it is an adaptation for the stage of the groundbreaking poetic memoir written about the philosophical journey to artist from attorney by Summer Hill Seven entitled Hang Time! The cover of this memoir is an artistic rendering of a lynching photo of Rubin Stacy.
Hang Time por Rubin Stacy was written to reflect on the American triumph over lynching by remembering Rubin Stacy, a homeless south Florida tenant farmer in 1935 who was lynched by an angry mob en route from Fort Lauderdale to a Miami-Dade prison after asking for a drink of water from a white housewife, whose fear escalated into a false accusation of rape.
Weaving blues music from the greats of the period such as Billie Holiday with hip-hop and fusing comedy, poetry, memoir, movement & tragedy to artfully explore race in America and the human condition, Summer Hill Seven builds on the genre of Poemedy he began with his first book – Notes of a Neurotic! and Platanos & Collard Greens (longest running hip-hop play in NYC) with a tour of this new work throughout South Florida high schools, U.S. colleges and regional theatres.
