Dan Cronin Art
Dan Cronin Art, Artist's Statement My art, as an extension of my existence, deals with the spiritual and emotional realities struggled with in the past and present. It is an expression of those states of angst and neurosis that asks the questions rather than providing answers and often resonates in the observer allowing him/her to get in touch with their own inner struggle. I feel more comfortable with abstract images but will often place objects or figures, mostly self-portraits that will contribute to the 'logic' of the piece as in the worm man series I have submitted here. I also feel compelled to use materials at hand whether they be from natural or manufactured sources. Mixing the two to create poignant images of the more melancholy side of existence and mortality. I see my work as the accumulation of small pieces of either brush strokes or bits of material that go to make up the whole but also retaining when possible the individual visibility of the elements. Working a project will often consist of repetitive minutiae in order to build the object or painting. Weaving is also something used often whether in actual fact as in the woven sculptures or painted to appear so in two-dimensional works. In the way of two-dimensional work I prefer to add three dimensional elements moving in the direction of the relief, therefore the use of mixed media to achieve these ends. If I limit myself to the two-dimensional I will use at times the artifice of perspective and depth to create the impression of three dimensionality. My work often fluctuates between the strong use of color or it's complete absence if you will (white) depending on the desired outcome. The worm man series is held together thematically with the isolated figure in relation to the cages and bars that hold sway even after the external is missing. Its purpose is to delve into the different ways of reacting and surviving in an imperfect world and the resulting scars that become part of who an individual and society becomes. Self esteem and individual value is placed in question as debasement and squalor are confronted and assimilated always striving for.
