What causes Gallstones?The gallbladder is a very important human organ; looks like a small sac, which helps in digestion. Gall bladder stores, a liquid known as bile, which helps to digest food. There are various reasons of gallstones, so first let us discuss what causes gallstones? Sometimes bile hardens in gallbladder and causes one or more stones produced in gallbladder. Bile is a mixture of water, fat, salts bilirubin (a yellowish liquid produced in liver) and cholesterol. Here an important question arises, what causes gallstones? There are many causes of gallstones, but the most important cause is hardening of liquid bile. Bile salts helps to break up cholesterol or fats. When the quantity of salt or cholesterol increased in liquid bile, it causes stone. Another reason of gallstones is bilirubin, when increased too much causes stone. Generally, gallbladder develops two different kinds of stones. One is caused by cholesterol, where as other caused by, bilirubin known as pigment stones. The one caused by cholesterol are greenish-yellow in colour, and larger than pigment stones. Small stones, usually dark coloured distinguished as Pigment stones .The stones in gallbladder may vary in sizes, from a grain of sand up to a size of ball. The stone in gallbladder may be from single stone to dozen stones. Gallbladder can contain a single form of stones, or combination of both. Mostly, pigment stones caused by liver or blood disorders, when the amount of bilirubin increased, moreover, stay in gallbladder for long time. There are also, some other reasons for gallstones, including obesity, some medication, or dieting. In some cases, crash dieting to reduce weight rapidly may cause gallstones. Medicines like oral contraceptives, cholesterol-decreasing pill, or obesity control pills may cause stone in gall bladder. There is also some relationship in diet and gallstones, however foods rich in cholesterol or fat may also cause stone in gallbladder, but the exact reason is still unrevealing. When gallstones and bile mixes, they can block the outflow of enzymes and especially of digestive enzymes, causing inflammation. Inflammation of duct or pancreas, are underlying causes of gallstones. Gallstone can produce pain and inflammation. It is very important to take medical advice as soon as possible. If gallstones, left untreated it may cause serious health conditions or death.
