The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research focusses attention on the status of crop genetic diversity and traditional cultural institutions in India. CIS strives to preserve local biodiversity, promote farmers' rights and prevent corporate plunder of indigenous knowledge systems. The rice seed band Vrihi is the first non-governmental rice seed bank for Indian farmers founded in 1997. Vrihi promotes cultivation of folk rice varieties through re-establishing the vanishing culture of seed exchange.
