化学上，金是一种过渡金属，在溶解后可以形成三价及单价正离子。金与大部分化学物都不会发生化学反应，但可以被氯、氟、王水及氰化物侵蚀。金能够被水银溶解，形成汞齐（但这并非化学反应）；能够溶解银及卑金属的硝酸不能溶解金。以上两个性质成为黄金精炼技术的基础，分别称为“加银分金法”（inquartation）及“金银分离法”（parting）。此外，硝酸可用来鉴别物品里是否含有金元素，这一古老的方法亦是英语谚语“acid test”的语源，意指用“测试黄金的标准”来测试目标物是否名副其实。
