Index Page - SCC - Supreme Court Commissioners - New Delhi, India
Since 2001 the Supreme Court has over the past five years passed as many as 45 interim orders on the Right to Food. This is largely due to the efforts of the Right to Food Campaign and as a direct result of the petition field in the Supreme Court (Civil Writ 196/ 2001) in the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court also put in place an independent mechanism, Commissioners of the Supreme Court (Writ 196/ 2001), to ensure compliance with the orders of the Court. The independent mechanism put in place by the Supreme Court was to ensure that State Governments and the Government of India comply with the interim orders issued by the Court. This is not the first instance where the Supreme Court has put in place such a mechanism, but it is the first instance of such an independent mechanism being put in place on the Right to Food. The Commissioners report to the Supreme Court largely through the reports that they submit.
