The wild adventures of Captain Harry Pidgeon were first disclosed in the February 1928 National Geographic Article that was eventually expanded into a book, Around the World Single-Handed, the Cruise of the Islander. Captain Harry was my great uncle and this site is intended to assist me in gathering research about his life and adventures. He was a self-taught photographer whose glass negatives have been preserved by the UC Riverside Museum of Photography, but it was his early childhood on an Iowa farm, raised by Quakers who had assisted runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad in Salem, Iowa, that caught the imagination of the public when he said around the world by himself in a non-motorized boat. He married my great-aunt when she was 50 and he was 75. He was so fit, however, that they lived on their yawl and several other boats until shortly before his death ten years later. He was an amazingly observant man who treated others with equal respect, regardless of color, religion, or economic status.
