HEED Handicrafts is a project of HEED Bangladesh. HEED Bangladesh was started in 1974 formally. But informally HEED Bangladesh worked for the war affected people in 1971. After the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971, thousands of Pakistani (Bihari ) people (non-Bengali) were living in different concentration camps as refugee, who could not go back to Pakistan. All of them were unemployed and it was impossible for them to work or to get jobs in Bangladesh as they have no citizenship and unfavorable social condition. So, HEED Bangladesh has inspired to create jobs and employment for the Bihari people who were living in different camps in Dhaka and also for the poor and marginalized Bangladeshi people, especially in handicrafts production and using locally available resources. HEED Handicrafts has also worked on block print and tribal (Monipuri) febric for the Leprosy cured Patients for their rehabilitation, who were under treatment in HEED Leprosy Hospital at Kamalganj in Moulvibazar District . Beside these HEED Handicrafts started work on wood curving and crochet for the poor and marginalized people at Dacop, Chalna and Khulna Districts to create job and employment as charity works of HEED Bangladesh. Many western donor agencies donated for performing the above mentioned activities. In becoming a sustainable program, we greatly owe to many of our ATO partners. Without the help of their craft consultants, we would never been to a place where we are now. But formally HEED Handicrafts started in 1978 as a job creation program of HEED Bangladesh.
