Global human sustenance is born of the farmer’s toil. And the farmer’s toil relies on Mother Nature’s greatest gift, water.
Unfortunately, the region of Datu Wereda, Ethiopia lacks access to this gift. More than 90% of the community’s population is agriculturists who struggle from year to year, from drought to drought. Despite the region’s proximity to several lakes, no one has installed irrigation systems to capitalize on the bodies of water. The farmers are fraught of uncertainty. The families live in unpredictability. The communities crumble without solidarity.
I-ImpactNow is a growing non-profit organization which works to alleviate this humanitarian plight. By implementing an innovative irrigation system to draw water from the nearby Lake Awassa and River Tikur-Wuha, I-ImpactNow will bring the gift of water to Datu Wereda. In addition, the organization will form a cooperative of 50 farmers to unify communities and harness the power of collaboration. These two goals will help develop an irrigation-based farming cooperative, an initiative, which will promote the values of self-empowerment and sustainability in Datu Wereda while instilling a sense of confidence in its neighbors.
