Orna Livni - Artist - I love to play with light, color, texture, and other elements of art to create perceptually interesting pieces. I violate expectations to challenge people’s views of art and to change the way they look at their surroundings. My presentations at Seminar HaKibbutizim College never allowed the audience to view my work passively. Each time I would find a unique way to control space, attention, and mood. One time I required the students to sit on stage rather in the audience. The next time I placed my artwork in a circle that they had to navigate to view. My fellow art students looked forward to my presentations because they learned to enjoy the unexpected. At the Kalisher Art Institute I wrapped heavy wire around the halls in such a way that it became impossible to tell where the wire was positioned. Although the wire was actually attached to the walls, it created the illusion that it filled the three dimensional space and was impossible to walk through. Using only one wire on white walls I could completely change people’s perception of space. I enjoy directing the attention of onlookers and shaping the meaning of the work by integrating multiple artistic elements. The colors and arrangement of shapes highlight hidden aspects of the subjects. By cutting up a picture of ducks and extending lines of color from the photograph, I brought originally subtle leaves to prominence at the same time eliminating the viewer’s awareness of ducks at all. For me it is joyous to discover the nuances of color. I love mixing colors to find just the right shade that will create the desired effect or illusion. The themes in my art come from my experiences. In many of my works you will see the influence of growing up in Tel Aviv, Israel, where art, music and ballet were an integral part of my daily life. I saw a passion for music and dance in my father and a love of the arts in my friends and their families. No matter where you walked there were museums and galleries. My journey, begun in the cultural centers and streets of Tel Aviv, shaped the person I am today. I look forward to continuing to mold physical materials in unusual ways and to see how I can affect perception through crafting materials and shaping light, sound, and space.
