Joel's Lens
According to the kind folks who provide this website format, I should use this space to inspire visitors to view my photographs. I like to take pictures. From time to time, people (mostly family, so maybe they are just being nice) seem to like a few of the pictures I take. Iowa City, Iowa, United States

Purpose: This site has evolved a lot over the years. Currently it is primarily intended to be a site where I can post photos for the enjoyment of family and friends. I am not a professional photographer. I have sold a few photos and occasionally get small commissions, but going back to school pretty much means the computer and photo projects I pursue are just for fun. Furthermore, I don't feel like spending a lot of time designing websites from scratch like I used to. I hope this current site combines ease of use with efficiency and that you enjoy browsing the pictures you find here.
With that in mind, if you are a friend or family member and would like a larger copy of any photo found here please post a comment with a request or email me. If you are a visitor and wish to use a copy of any image I appreciate it if you ask permission and give attribution. You can reach me by emailing ben@bens-lens.com.
Workflow: With the exception of some very old photos, I shoot exclusively raw photos with my Nikon D80. I have a limited set of lenses and the discerning eye will note this in my pictures. I used to process my photos in Lightroom 1.0 and PhotoShop on an old Powermac. Most of these older photos are not available on this site but as time allows I might dust some of them off and post them here.
In the last couple of years I've migrated away from the Macintosh platform into the world of Linux. The only serious raw photography programs I am aware of for Linux are Bibble 5 and Lightzone. (Rawtherapee is coming along but I don't feel it's quite ready for serious use -- and my opinion is that this is the best of the open-source raw options.) I use Bibble 5 Pro and a couple of plugins for just about everything these days. Bibble has some quirks but overall I like it a lot, and I only rarely need to fire up the Gimp to fix things up.
If you have questions about work-flow or photography using Linux or any of the pictures here please feel free to contact me by posting a comment or by sending an email to ben@bens-lens.com. Enjoy!
