Lincoln Briney / Jazz and popular singers who mire songs in conventions of the trade are never in short supply, but very rare, indeed, are vocalists like Lincoln Briney who make the familiar sound new. Elegantly and vulnerably, Lincoln makes his way to authentic sentiments within the songs he sings. With intuitive restraint and measure, he gears each vocal gesture to the lyrics and melodies, so that their meaning and lyricism emerge. He glories in the intricate, lilting rhythms, meters, and patterns of Brazilian songs. He indulges in no vocal hijinks, no grandstanding, no scatting ó none of the tired trappings of the trade. Instead, there is transparent attention to mood, feeling and clarity. Raised in Northern California amid songs offered up to heaven, Briney soon was hooked on the gloriously earthly Betty Carter and Jobim. He explored the great legacies of Nina Simone, Shirley Horn and Helen Merrill, but Jobim, Joo Gilberto, and their compatriots became his greatest inspirations.
