Lupus Foundation of Colorado
Lupus erythematosus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of various parts of the body such as the skin, joints, blood and kidneys. In an autoimmune condition such as lupus, the immune system fails to tell the difference between foreign substances (antigens) and its own cells and tissues. The immune system forms antibodies (special protein substances made by the body to defend against bacteria and other foreign substances) that attack healthy tissues and organs. For most people, lupus is a mild disease affecting only a few body organs; for others, it may cause serious and even life-threatening problems.
