Brannan Robinson was born September 27th 1974 in the small mountain town of Fernie, B.C. After moving to the Okanagan Valley at the age of four, Brannan spent the early portion of his life focusing on music rather than visual arts. Upon graduation from high school, Brannan chose to expand his horizons by enrolling in visual arts program at the local University. Since he had not taken any art classes or had any art education of any sort when he enrolled, he spent the first two years absorbing as much fundamental information about art that he could. Upon completion of his second year, Brannan transferred to the University of Victoria, where he began to study art in earnest.
A graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Victoria in 1998, Brannan Robinson has been active in the art world for the past eight years. Believing that an artist should arm himself with as many tools as possible, Brannan has broadened his experience by working in gallery management, artist representation, consulting and custom framing. Being immersed in artwork and the art world has influenced and inspired Brannan and his work.
Once Brannan had completed his training, he realized that he had two distinct methods of creating art. On one hand, he had conceptual pieces that focused primarily on innovation and the application of theoretical concepts he had learned in University. On the other, he had aesthetical pieces, which also used art theory and concept, but were ultimately focused on aesthetics and composition. Wanting desperately to keep these two styles of creation separate, Brannan chose two different names for these groups of works and used two separate signatures to differentiate them.
Constantly challenging himself, Brannan works in multiple mediums at the same time. In one piece, he paints in watercolour and in another he sculpts using a ceramic compound. Believing that rules and techniques in art should be pushed and sometimes broken, Brannan attempts to use 'tried and tested' mediums in unconventional ways.
When asked to describe his artwork, he often shrugs, I wish I had the vocabulary to properly explain what it is that I do when I paint. I start with a simple idea. I then react to that original idea and on and on it goes
..I dont know what my pieces look like to someone else, I am far too associated with them to even imagine how they would affect someone else. I paint for me, and hope that others will like them.
