Diabetes and associated complications contribute to an impaired quality of life and substantial disability. Therefore, complete diabetes care should mean close monitoring of all changes occurring in every organ of the body to reduce the severity of the disease. Established in September 1991, the Dr.Mohans Diabetes Specialities Centre (DMDSC), at Gopalapuram, Chennai is one of the few centres of its kind to offer a One-Stop comprehensive diabetes treatment facility. Recently, DMDSC has been designated as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Noncommunicable Diseases Prevention and Control.
Led by Dr.V.Mohan, internationally acclaimed Diabetologist and Chairman and Dr. (Mrs) Rema Mohan, well known Ophthalmologist and Managing Director and their enthusiastic team , State-of-the-art facilities for diabetes and related diseases are available at the centre. Recently branches of the Dr.Mohans Diabetes Specialities Centre have been established at Anna Nagar and Tambaram, Chennai and Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad and Vellore to provide international quality health care to the exploding diabetic population. Today with over 1,75,000 registered diabetic patients, Dr.Mohans DSC is making rapid strides in its march towards Total Quality Management. Presently both the Gopalapuram and Annanagar centres are ISO 9001:2000 certified units. Indeed Dr. Mohans DSC is the First ISO 9001:2000 Certified Diabetes Centre in the world!
The main centre is a 75-bedded hospital that is housed at a six-storyed building with outpatient, in-patient and intensive care facilities for diabetes and associated complications. While the branch at Hyderabad has a full-fledged Diabetes Unit, complete with outpatients and a 25 bedded inpatient facilities. The facilities at both the centres include state-of-the-art equipment and space for administration, physicians and spacious primary and secondary health care unit and laboratory. The out patient unit provides both primary and secondary health-care services.
The Indira Eye Institute for diabetes-a unit of DMDSC has the distinction of being one of the exclusive Diabetic Eye Institutes in India with some of the latest equipments for treating diabetic retinopathy. The Institute has an array of sophisticated state-of-the-art equipment for diagnosing and managing eye disorders in diabetes which include colour digital photography, Fundus Flourescein Angiography (FFA),Optical coherence Tomography (OCT) and Computerized field testing. Laser therapy for diabetic retinal disorders & cataract surgery by Phacoemulsification are also conducted at the Institute. A well equipped operation theatre is available at the institute.
Education of diabetic individuals is given prominence and regular individual and group sessions are conducted. DMDSC maintains electronic medical records of every patient with information on clinical and biochemical characteristics interlinked by a Local Area Network (LAN). DMDSC is the First Diabetes Centre in Asia to have fully computerized diabetes services.
